Relapse

Relapse Prevention

A DRUG can be defined as any substance taken to modify, change, or heal something within the body. There are both legal and illegal drugs. Prescription drugs have medicinal value and are legally prescribed by doctors. Street drugs have no medicinal value and can only be purchased illegally. For the purposes of addiction rehabilitation, make no mistake, alcohol is also considered a drug, and one of the most dangerous. Regardless of the type of drug, many are physically addictive and all share the potential to be psychologically addictive. Drugs can be classified and put into groups according to the effects produced on the brain.

Relapse and Chronic Relapse - is Recovery Possible?

Yes recovery is possible, In fact Relapse is not part of recovery. Relapse prevention should be taught in treatment as part of the recovery process.  make sure Relapse prevention is part of the treatment services before you commit to a length of stay in the residential drug and alcohol treatment center.

Relapse is a heartbreaking event for a family it can in fact be the breaking point. All too often relapse is where the family takes a hard line and tells the addict to "do it on their own" or "we can't help you anymore". This is the time families are needed most. There are other treatment options such as programs that have higher success rates or that offer long-term relapse prevention programs after treatment.  Some relapse prevention programs offer aftercare for up to a year or more after residential treatment is completed.  There are aftercare programs that should be implemented prior to discharging from the residential drug and alcohol rehab programs to help prevent relapse and provide support to families  Some aftercare programs are free and extended to the families to continue the work and learn more tools for the addicts continued success.

It is important that the treatment center has treated the bio-physical drug cravings and the underlying emotional pain, that is the root of the addiction.  Make sure to choose a program that will treat the whole person and provide aftercare services that address relapse.

Addiction and alcoholism are tricky afflictions. The addict has most likely deeply hurt the family. Lying, cheating, stealing, job loss, violence, even criminal behaviors are all symptoms of the addictive behavior. If these were the symptoms of diabetes, would you give up? Of course not, you would try new treatments. If you have a chronic relapse victim in your life there is hope, find appropriate treatment.  Call Drug and Alcohol Rehab Services and share your concerns.  We will share the best options available with you.

Chronic relapse addicts can be very trying on the family.  Never giving up should not to be confused with enabling on the part of the family. The enabling behavior is destructive and must be stopped immediately upon identifying the active addict or alcoholic. The family must provide treatment options only. For the addict unwilling to get treatment professional intervention is recommended.  Call to learn more about interventions and support groups for the families.
